While we haven't seen a full 'return to normal' since the beginning of the pandemic, this weekend will mark the return of La Fiesta Mexicana at Calder Plaza in Grand Rapids. The 2020 in-person event was canceled and last year's event was held virtually.

The Mexican Heritage Association of Grand Rapids kicked off the event at noon on Friday and is celebrating the 52nd annual edition of the event. The group describes getting to return for the 2021 event:

It is within our nature as a community to overcome any situation because we are a group of hard-working people with many different dreams and a passion to share our culture and traditions with you.

This is why it’s so important now more than ever to share the great news that we continue to overcome, to be resilient, proud , and grateful about the beautiful city of Grand Rapids. I thank our community for letting us celebrate 52th years of tradition, culture, history, perseverance and success.

Admission to the event is free and is scheduled to run from 12n-11pm on Friday & Saturday and 11a-7p on Sunday. The event will feature activities such as traditional and modern music, food, beverages, dancers, shopping, as well as activities for children and the child at heart. Live music, delicious food from more than 8 different restaurants, beer, a dance contest, and a celebration of independence will also be a part of this year's event.

On Saturday the 11th at 5:00 PM the ceremony of independence will feature an appearance by Fernando Gonzalez Saiffe, the Consul Titular of Mexico to Michigan.
