Lil Nas X has yet to drop his debut album, but that didn't stop him from getting an Album of the Year nomination for the 2020 Grammy Awards.

On Wednesday (Nov. 20), it was announced that the "Old Town Road" performer's 7 EP was nominated for the prestigious award for the forthcoming awards show, which will air from Los Angeles' Staples Center on Jan. 26, 2020. It's early, but so far, people are pretty pissed off.

"What’s up with lil Nas X getting a nomination for album of the year for a super shitty EP????" one Twitter user said of Nas X's EP, which was nominated for Album of the Year alongside Bon Iver (i,i), Lana Del Rey (Norman Fucking Rockwell!), Billie Eilish (When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?), H.E.R.  (I Used to Know Her), Ariana Grande (thank u, next),
Lizzo (Cuz I Love You) and Vampire Weekend (Father of the Bride).

"Up early thinking about how lil nas’ album is up album of the year AT THE GRAMMYS but tyler the creator’s isnt," wrote another.

While Lil Nas X's project was a commercially successful one that also earned some positive reviews from critics, the confusion around his selection for the nomination is understandable. After all, the project was never marketed as an album in the first place.

Still, the project actually falls within the Grammys guidelines for an album certification, so things make sense on that angle. According to the awards committee, "For purposes of eligibility, The Academy defines an ALBUM as having no less than five (5) different tracks, and having a total playing time of no less than 15 minutes."

Somewhat curiously, Lil Nas X's debut major label EP is a project that was deemed worthy of an Album of the Year nomination, but it wasn't nominated for Best Rap Album. The project is one that finds him delving into multiple genres, so that might be the reason.

For his part, Lil Nas X, who has yet to embark on his first tour, tweeted out what appears to be a simple reaction to his nominations.

Nas X was also nominated for Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
