Medical Providers That Treat Addiction Can Get Student Loans Paid

A new program in Michigan is offering student loan repayment to doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and counselors who treat opioid addiction.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced the new Michigan Opioid Treatment Access Loan Repayment Program, this morning. The goal of the program is to increase the availability of opioid use disorder treatment in Michigan, especially in areas where treatment is difficult to access.

The program is available to medical doctors and osteopathic medicine doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and substance use disorder counselors who begin offering opioid treatment or expand treatment that is already being offered.

It's a great opportunity for medical professionals to lower their own debt while expanding treatment options. The application process to participate has begun, but it won't last long. Applications to repay medical education loans through the Opioid Treatment Access Loan Repayment Program can be filled out here through June 30.

The program is being started thanks to a $500,000 grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.
