As temperatures drop across West Michigan, ice begins forming on lakes, creating stunning views and tempting adventures.

However, officials are warning that walking on icy lakes, especially the ice shelves along Lake Michigan, can be extremely dangerous.

You believe it is common sense but, as you may have learned, sense is not as common as you think.

Not All Ice Is Your Friend

At Grand Haven State Park, visitors have been seen climbing on ice shelves near the shoreline, but Deputy Fire Chief Chris Mantels from Saugatuck Township strongly advises against it. The issue? You can’t tell how thick or stable the ice is.

"Ice shelves can create valleys or caves underneath, and you might unknowingly step on a thin layer above a deep hole straight into the lake," Mantels explained.

Rescue operations are also nearly impossible if someone falls through the ice. Mantels emphasized that the unstable nature of ice shelves puts both the victim and rescue crews at risk.

If you’re eager to explore the ice, frozen inland lakes are a safer option, but precautions are still necessary. No ice is ever completely safe!

It is recommended to always measure ice thickness before stepping on it, wear a life jacket, and stay alert. Even experienced ice fishermen can fall through unexpectedly, and a life jacket can help you stay afloat until help arrives.

Lastly, always have a plan. Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll return. This simple step can save valuable time if an emergency arises.

The precursor to frostbite, frostnip, is not quite as serious and can be treated by re-warming, but with frostbite, permanent damage can occur and in severe cases may require amputation.
