Michigan residents now have a free online way to calculate child support.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Child Support has launched an online calculator.

The MiChildSupport calculator has previously been used by staff to estimate payments.

Users can calculate what a monthly child support payment might be, compare results provided by staff, and come to an agreement with the other parent on the support amount based on a state formula.

Erin Frisch, Director of the Office of Child Support said,

By making this calculator accessible to the public, the Michigan child support program is allowing parents and others to gain a better understanding of how child support is calculated in Michigan. This will strengthen customer self-service and help us deliver consistent and innovative services so that children can receive the support they need and deserve."

For those looking to use the calculator, the process takes about 45 minutes. Users should have income information for both parents, along with health insurance and child care information.
