Getting Your REAL ID Is Pretty Easy In Michigan – Here’s How
As the last quarter of 2024 is coming up, it is time to really start thinking about changing to a REAL ID.
If you planning to travel within the next few months or 2025, you will need to handle this sooner than later.
REAL ID Guidelines
In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act, in response to the September 11th terrorist attacks.
The REAL ID deadline for United States citizens has been extended a few times already, with the new deadline being May 7th, 2025.
If you do not have a REAL ID by the deadline next year, you will not be allowed through TSA checkpoints or certain facilities.
With all of this information, you may be thinking that is rather difficult to get your REAL ID. You are in luck! It is not that hard to obtain in Michigan.
How To Upgrade To A REAL ID in Michigan?
You must visit a Secretary of State office to convert your regular ID to a REAL ID. Besides visiting the Secretary of State's office, you must also have the following documentation.
- current Michigan driver's license or ID
- valid, unexpired U.S. passport, birth certificate, or any proof of legal presence
- certified legal name-change document (if your name is different than your birth certificate)
If you are wondering if it will cost you to convert to a REAL ID, you will be happy to know that there is no added charge if you convert when your license or ID needs to be renewed or replaced.
If that is not the case, you will need to pay a correction fee for the REAL ID.
- $9.00 for license
- $10.00 for ID
