Instead of walking off all the Thanksgiving food calories at the mall (or laying on the couch all day), spend your Black Friday enjoying Michigan's outdoors.

In a nationwide initiative to #OptOutside, there will be free entry to Michigan's state parks on Friday the 29th. The Michigan DNR offers a variety of options to take advantage of the day, such as

  • Hit the water and experience some of the best cold-weather fishing around.
  • Run, walk, hike, bike, snowshoe, cross-country ski or ride on more than 13,000 miles of state-designated trails and pathways.
  • Find a new hunting spot on Michigan’s public lands, including state recreation areas, state parks, game areas and forests.
  • Visit a historic site and discover Michigan’s fascinating backstory.
  • Explore Michigan’s public lands for birding or wildlife viewing.

The DNR also has a list of various things to do here.

Press & Guide says the #OptOutside was created by the outdoor recreation company REI in 2015 and several agencies in several states partake.

There will be free entry to Michigan's 103 state parks, 138 forest campgrounds, state trails, and boat launches.
