If you watched Michigan rally and squeak out a 20-17 win over Northwestern Saturday, you may have witnessed one of the most bizarre penalty calls in college football history. Seriously. WTF.

With Michigan trailing 17-13 early in the fourth quarter, quarterback Shea Patterson took off on a 21 yard run after faking the handoff to running back Karan Higdon.

But the play was called back for a holding penalty on Higdon, which was weird because Higdon was in the process of being tackled by a Northwestern defender after getting the fake.

FOX announcer Joel Klatt referred to the call as the 'Penalty from Mars', and it was almost the ruin of the Wolverines, as they punted the ball back to Northwestern shortly thereafter. Luckily, M's defense held, and the Wolverines scored on their next possession to earn the win.

Big Ten referees are under no obligation to explain their calls. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said in the post game press conference that the referee had confirmed to him that the call was on Higdon for holding the linebacker. Was their something we missed?
