Common Winter Weather Mistake

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning posted a winter weather warning on Facebook that all Michigan residents should take into account.

"Never use cruise control on snowy or icy roads. If your car skids, the cruise control will accelerate to maintain speed, causing your wheels to spin even faster."

Using cruise control on icy roads could lead to avoidable crashes. According to Michigan's website, "during the 2022-2023 winter season, there were a total of 30,786 winter-weather crashes, including 59 fatal crashes."

With the statewide outreach program "Drive Slow on Ice & Snow," the state released other winter safety tips.

Winter Tire Choice

Your tire choice is the most important decision you make when it comes to your vehicle. It is the "only contact between your car and the road."

While all-season tires are effective, they have limited ice and snow capabilities. With living in Michigan, it is recommended to get winter tires.

"Winter tires can allow you to stop up to 50% faster on ice and snow. This is equivalent to stopping 2-3 car lengths sooner."

Check Your Tire Pressure

When the temperatures dropped, your tire pressure might have alerted you. That is because when it gets colder, the colder air takes up less space in the tire.

Once you add air to your tires, be sure not to overinflate them. The state's website shared that "this can result in reduced traction and braking ability."

While we are going down a checklist, make sure to do the penny test on your tire to test the tread.
