Grand Rapids’ Mitten Brewing Company Shutting Down One Of Its Michigan Locations
Well, this is a bummer...
Mitten Brewing Company is one of my favorite spots to grab a beer (and yummy pizza!) in Grand Rapids. I've always meant to hit up their Northern Michigan location...
But unfortunately it's permanently closing.
Mitten Brewing Company Announces Closure of Northport Location
Mitten Brewing Company shared the news to on social media that their Northport location in Leelanau County is shutting down for good.
The original Mitten Brewing Company was founded in 2012 on Leonard St. in Grand Rapids by lifelong friends Chris Andrus and Max Trierweiler. In 2016, Mitten Brewing Co. opened its Northport location at 112 W Nagonaba St., replacing the previous Northport Brewing. The brewery opened its third location in Saugatuck in 2018.
Why is Mitten Brewing closing in Northport?
In a post to Facebook, owners say, "This was not our desire, and we did everything we could to reach an equitable renewal agreement with our landlord" and, "This was not a failure of business. In fact, this year has been one of our most successful yet."
The owners go on to say,
Today our landlord gave us an ultimatum: leave at the end of the current lease term OR commit to a one-year renewal with an unaffordable penalty fee attached, as well as a commitment not to host the Village’s holiday events. We could not accept those terms.
Mitten Brewing Company is still planning to host the Village of Northport's holiday events. Follow Mitten Brewing Company - Northport on Facebook for additional details about upcoming event.
While an exact closure date has not been announced, they say their lease is up January 7th, 2023.
