Kent County has been hit especially hard by COVID-19 infections since the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic began several weeks ago.  And the second wave that has brought an increase in infections shows no signs of slowing for the remainder of 2020.

The second wave has hit the county so hard that over half of the total COVID-19 infections have happened since the beginning of November.  From first reported case in March through October 31st, there have been 14,995 COVID-19 infections in Kent County.  Then from November 1st through the 30th, we have seen an additional 16,825 infections bringing the total in the county to 31,820 COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began.  You can find all of that data and more on the Kent County COVID-19 Dashboard.

Daily COVID-19 infections have seemed to decline over the last several days, probably in part because of the "Pause to Save Lives", but gatherings over Thanksgiving could reverse that trend.

In a press conference earlier today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said "A leading model shows that if we don’t take aggressive action right now, we could soon see 1,000 deaths per week here in Michigan,”  Now, that is just one model and it is on the extreme side of things, but it is definitely a possibility if people let down their guard and return to daily life as if we weren't in a pandemic.  The "Pause to Save Lives" is set to expire on December 8th, and depending on how the public responds, the next few months could be very bad.
