With Rosa Parks Circle closed for the foreseeable future, West Michiganders have been wondering where they're going to get their ice skating fix in this season. Well, we officially have an answer.

Last week, rumors started swirling that public skating would be moved to Van Andel Arena for the 2021-2022 winter season, but there were some hoops to jump through in order to make that happen.

On December 10, the Downtown Development Authority officially approved the move, and now the details have been hammered out. Public skating at Van Andel Arena will officially kick off on Monday, December 20, 2021.

Public skating at Van Andel Arena will work a little differently than it has at Rosa Parks Circle.

How Much Does Public Skating Cost at Van Andel Arena?

First, some great news - This year, everything, from admission to skate rentals, will be completely FREE.

How Does Public Ice Skating at Van Andel Arena Work?

  • There are a few other changes:
  • This year's season will end on January 16, 2022.
  • You won't be able to skate for as long as you want. In a Facebook post, it was explained that there are 29 90-minute sessions scheduled for this season.
  • Each 90-minute session has a capacity of 150 skaters. 100 of those slots are reservable, the other 50 are for walk-ups.
  • You can make reservations as a group, but your group should only include members of your own household.
  • If you're looking for skating related-information, don't call up the arena. All information will be posted on the Rosa Parks Circle Ice Rink Facebook page.

When Will Skating at Rosa Parks Circle Return?

Hopefully, skating will be able to return to Rosa Parks Circle next season, but it appears that that will all depend on when that giant piece of granite finally makes it here.
