There is a nationwide rock salt shortage that is making it increasingly difficult for local governments and homeowners to keep the roads and sidewalks clear and safe.

The situation has become so severe that New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued an executive order and declared a State of Emergency to help facilitate emergency salt deliveries.

With Michigan often experiencing sub-zero temperatures and icy road and sidewalk conditions, the lack of rock salt is coming at the worst time!

As demand rises and the supply dwindles, what are Michiganders supposed to do?

Alternatives To Rock Salt

Fortunately, there are several options that you can use that can combat the ice and keep you, your family, and all of Michigan safe.

Speaking of rock salt, table salt could be used as a backup de-icer. Is it the best option? Most likely not, but you have to do what you have to do.

Keep in mind that table salt can only work effectively when the temperatures are above 15℉.

Another alternative is water-softener salt, which helps melt the ice more slowly than traditional rock salt.

It is available in larger bags, but it does tend to be more expensive than rock salt.

You can also use any of these methods as a de-icing solution:

• Sand
• Cinders
• Coffee Grounds
• Kitty Litter
• Beet Juice (hence why Michigan cities use this method), or
• Baking Soda

With Michigan's winter in full swing, preparing for icy and snowy conditions is crucial for your safety.
