Did You Know You Can Fined For Running Over A Firehose in Michigan?
First responders are our protectors.
When it comes to their equipment, everything needs to be in tip-top shape to make sure they can protect us effectively and efficiently.
That sense of care cannot happen if you mess with their equipment even with good intentions.
Can You Get Fined For Running Over A Firehose In Michigan?
It may seem like it is not a big deal. Running over a fire hose is an issue.
You cannot run over a fire hose in Michigan. It is considered a civil infraction, so you will get ticketed for this offense.
There was a recent situation where Muskegon firefighters were working on a house fire. Unfortunately, vehicles drove over the hose so the firefighters had to call the police to help manage the situation.
Water moves through a fire hose with high velocity and pressure. So, if you drive over a fire hose, you may cause a burst in the house.
That burst will not only damage the hose, but it could also cause severe injuries and potential damage to cars, etc.
That is the reason why staying out of first responder's way is crucial to your, theirs, and everyone else's safety.
If you do not believe me, you might believe the Michigan Legislature.
Michigan Legislature's Section 257.680 says that driving over a fire hose is a civil infraction.
(1) A streetcar or vehicle shall not be driven over an unprotected hose of a fire department when laid down on a street, private driveway, or streetcar track, to be used at a fire or alarm of fire, without the consent of the fire department official in command.
(2) A person who violates this section is responsible for a civil infraction.
So, the next time that you see an unprotected fire hose near you, keep away from it at all costs.
