The winter months are getting the best of all of us, with this years nearly constant snow you may find yourself pacing your home dreaming of days you can get outside to do your favorite summertime activities. But if you're a fan of disc golf, you're not going to have to wait for all of the snow here in West Michigan to melt to play again.

For the seventh year, the Freeze Fest Disc Golf Tournament is returning to Jaycee Park (1088 Gentian Dr. SE, in Kentwood) on Saturday February 19th from 9am -1pm.

But how do you play disc golf in the snow? Thankfully, we've found a few tips to help you prepare:

According to the Youtube channel Daily Disc Golf, there are five quick things you can do to get the edge when it comes to playing in the cold and snow.

They say to stand still, because of the ground being a little more treacherous than summertime play, it's important to have a sold grounding.

Next is your power grip, it's important to make sure you have a good hold on your disc. It may be tempting to play with gloves, but you'll lose some of your control.

The next tip goes hand in hand with your power grip, they recommend that you use Chalk and Ribbons to help you with making sure you're able to throw with more precision. Bonus - the color of the chalk will help you find and pull it out of any snow banks easier.

While you won't really need to do this for the tournament itself, if you plan to play in the snow any this season, it's important to shovel your spot and make it easier on yourself to get good footing.

And finally, they recommend throwing more Hyzerflips, because distance is king when you're playing in the cold. After all, you don't want to stop and pick your disc out of the snow every six feet.

This doubles disc golf tournament is a favorite for people who aren't afraid to bundle up to get 9 holes in before the ice melts, and thankfully it's not just for show, it's for a great cause too.

The tournament has a $40 entry fee per pair that is playing, but that money will be going to benefit the Little Free Pantry, which began as a community service project for MLK Day in 2017. Located inside the Kentwood Activities Center (355 48th St. SE), it helps a number of Kentwood families in need.
