It's always fun when the West Michigan Whitecaps do a name change with special jerseys and merch for fans but why are they doing it Saturday night?
What is the Temporary New Name for the West Michigan Whitecaps
The West Michigan Whitecaps will change their name for one day to bring awareness to a project that has been going on in the Grand River behind the LMCU Ballpark for several years.
For one day the West Michigan Whitecaps will be known as the Grand Rapids Dam Breakers.
This isn't the first time the Whitecaps have made a name change. One day a year the team also goes by the name of the Beer City Bung Hammers.
Why Are the Whitecaps Calling the Team the Grand Rapids Dam Breakers?
The organization for the West Michigan Whitecaps understands the Grand Rapids Whitewater project is a massive community effort and the need for awareness to the project is very important. As you can see in the video above, this is a very important project to Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss.
According to FOX 17, there is a partnership between Consumers Energy and the Grand Rapids Whitewater project to remove dangerous dams, restore habitats, block invasive species and most importantly bring the rapids back to the Grand River.
The Whitecaps are stepping up for their second season in a row to bring awareness to the Grand Rapids Whitewater project and help raise money to complete this massive project that is not only good for the Grand River but the 2-mile stretch of community the project is taking place.

When the Grand Rapids Whitewater Project is completed it will enhance the parks that are near this section of the river as well as bring economic opportunities to the shores of the Grand River.
How Are the Whitecaps Helping With the Grand Rapids Whitewater Project?
When the Whitecaps make a temporary name change they also create some rare merch for fans with hats, t-shirts, jerseys, and more. A portion of the proceeds from the merch sold will be donated to the Grand Rapids Whitewater project.

When is the Grand Rapids Dam Breakers Game?
The Grand Rapids Dam Breakers (Whitecaps) will take on the Dayton Dragons on Saturday, July 30. The first pitch will be at 6:35 p.m.
