What A Score! The Scoreboard from Sullivan Field Is Finding New Life At Mitten Brewing Company
Nothing goes better than two of America's favorite pastimes: Baseball and drinking Beer.
And now apparently a decade's old Grand Rapids baseball relic is finding a new home at one of of Grand Rapids favorite breweries.
What is the history of The Grand Rapids Sullivans?
According to baseball reference, The Sullivans were formed by Grand Rapids businessman Bob Sullivan and had a winning legacy. Not only did The Sullivans appear at every National Baseball Congress World Series from 1955 to 1987, they also won the tournament four times.
Valley Field was built in 1937 and served as the home of Grand Rapid's first minor league baseball team, The Grand Rapids Sullivans, from 1953 until 1999. It was later renamed to Sullivan Field, in honor of the team that called it home for so many decades.
Why is the scoreboard leaving Sullivan Field?
In 2019, the group Fans of Valley Field organized to work on raising money to renovate what has been called the "Wrigley Field of Grand Rapids". Their efforts were a success, and in 2021 were approved to start upgrading the space this summer.
A part of that renovation effort includes updating the scoreboard to something more modern, leaving this iconic piece of grand rapids history looking for a new home. Now that it's been spotted outside of Mitten Brewing, we know we'll still be enjoying it for years to come.
When will it be installed and available to see at Mitten Brewing?
There has been no official announcement, but seeing as it's already sitting outside you'll likely see it on their Outfield wall soon.
Keep your eyes and ears posted to their social media pages, because they're likely to show off his beauty as soon as it's up and running. (and what a great view it will be from the side of a Pizza Flight shared amongst friends or family.)
