The World’s Most Phallic Building Is In Michigan—And Locals Love It!
From the swinging bridge in Croswell to the Two-Story Outhouse in Cedar Lake, Michigan, there are some rather odd sights.
While I have never been to Ypsilanti, the city's name alone has me interested in learning more.
In my research, I found that this Michigan city has a very 'phallic' history.

World's Most Phallic Building
Designed by William R. Coats, the Ypsilanti Water Tower has been the subject of endless giggles and jokes since it was finished in 1980.
Back then, the historic tower cost $21,435.63 to build, which is over $660,000 if adjusted for inflation.
Standing 147 feet tall, the tower was designed to provide water and generate electricity for the city of Ypsilanti's street lamps.
But, let's be honest - the real legacy of the water tower is the amount of double entendres and dirty jokes you can create about it.
In 2003, Cabinet magazine voted and crowned the Ypsilanti Water Tower as the "World's Most Phallic Building," a title it still holds to this day.
Locals affectionally refer to the water tower as the "Brick Dick," which is also shared in a recent TikTok video.
Besides its phallic nature, it also comes with its own urban legend. There are claims that the tower will crumble and fall if a virgin ever graduates from Eastern Michigan University. However, judging by the fact that it is still standing, I believe the students of Eastern Michigan University have not let that legend affect them.
Despite all of the raunchy jokes, the Ypsilanti Water Tower is still a beloved landmark for the community. It also has helped many lost travelers find their way through the town.
After all, you can say, "Just head toward the giant stone you-know-what," and you will never get lost in Ypsilanti again.
So, if you are ever stopping through Ypsilanti, stop by and see the iconic tower.
