Childish Gambino Is Working on New Music
So it turns out reports of Childish Gambino‘s impending demise were greatly exaggerated. In a new interview with BBC Radio 1, Donald Glover, who’d said he was retiring his musical alter ego back in June, reveals that he’s been working on some brand new music.
Glover says living in London has inspired his new work. “I’ve been working on that here,” he reveals. “You guys have been very instrumental in my music. London has been very inspirational.”
Earlier in the interview, the reporter says they’re not sure what to call Glover, seeing as he’d hinted at retiring his rap moniker. Glover, whose Awaken, My Love! album earned plenty of critical acclaim, is quick to clear up the confusion. “Yeah, but it’s not yet, though,” he says. “You still have a lot more time of calling me that if you want.”
The revelation is good news for Gambino fans who might have suspected he’s losing his steam musically. Back in June, the Atlanta star explained why, exactly, he was planning to leave the mantle of Childish Gambino in the past.
“There’s nothing worse than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’” he explained. “You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”
Glover also said his rising popularity would force him to abandon the “punk” attitude he’s developed up to this point. “I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk,” he said at the time. “Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at Atlanta as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”
During a recent interview, Glover’s friend Chance The Rapper revealed that they’d been working on some new music, so it doesn’t look like Gambino’s going anywhere any time soon.
