These days cyberbullying is just as bad, if not worse, than bullying someone in person; and it will soon be a crime in Michigan.

This March it will officially be against the law to cyberbully. Detroit Metro Times reports that former Governor Snyder signed the House bill into law last month before leaving office. It was first introduced in 2017.

The new law states that anyone guilty of the crime will face misdemeanor charges with up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine for first-time offenders. If repeated, a person can receive up to 5 years in prison and have to pay $1,000. If a death occurs as a result, you're looking at 10 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines!

According to Michiganvotes.com, "cyberbully" is defined

...as using a computer network, or a telecommunications system with the intention to intimidate, frighten, harass or cause emotional distress to another person.

Snyder said in a statement that this bill shows how serious bullying is and will not be tolerated in our state.
