De La Soul Links Up With Estelle and The Roots to Perform ‘Memory of… (Us)’ [Video]
Every now and then, hip hop veterans manage to sprinkle a dose of nostalgia back into our lives. This past Tuesday night (Sept. 27), New York triumvirate, De La Soul, blessed The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon with a sizzling performance of their song "Memory of...(Us)." To bolster the beauty of their performance, they leaned on Estelle and The Roots, who definitely provided the trio with more than just a helping hand.
Accompanied by a bevy of violinists, the level of soul within that performance captivated the entire room. After successfully releasing a chart-topping album in and the Anonymous Nobody... that featured a plethora of marquee names like Snoop Dogg, Usher, 2 Chainz, Little Dragon, Jill Scott, and more, it's clearly evident that the boom-bap sound is still alive and well. The album was originally funded by their fans, who were famished and desperately needed new material to stave off their hunger. Initially, De La was hoping to only receive $110,000. To their amazement, they were blessed with over $600,000.
“We started looking into it and asking around,” said Plug One to Complex. “A few of the musicians who worked on the album, they had friends who had successful Kickstarter campaigns. [We] bounced off ideas, listened to what they had to say. In our investigation, we realized that even there were fans of ours that were familiar with the platform, so it helped us to feel like ‘Well, this is the right thing to do.’”
Recently, the group released their highly anticipated documentary, De La Soul Is Not Dead earlier this month.
Check out their performance above, and be sure to cop their new album, as well.
