One of the Coldest Places in America is in Michigan
The crazy thing is ... it's not even in the UP!
When I moved from Louisiana to Michigan all of my friends asked if I was crazy and did I realize just how cold it got here. I said, 'Yeah, yeah I know it gets cold.' I had no clue it could get THIS cold.
Back in good old Feb 9, 1934, in Vanderbilt, Michigan it got down to -51. NEGATIVE FIFTY-ONE!!
That's below the freezing point of both clear and saltwater, Mercury, Nitric Acid, and Glycerol.
Also, that's almost as cold as it is on Mars (-61).
That's pretty stinking cold!
Some of the parting advice my friends from the south gave me was "get a good coat" while my friends from the north would suggest "Get some good boots." I can say after our relatively mild winter last year, I can in fact verify good boots are more important than a "good coat'.
Here's hoping it doesn't get down to -51 this year.
