Back to improve last year's 14th place finish, the team representing 8th Day CrossFit in Grand Rapids landed a top ten spot in the CrossFit Games.

A Rally Saturday Brings 8th Day Black A Top Ten Finish

The 8th Day CrossFit Black foursome wound up tenth in the international CrossFit Games Team Competition, competed over the weekend at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI.

After winning an event and getting a great start in the first two days of the competition, the team struggled a bit on Friday before rallying in Saturday's workouts.

Team members in the photo above are L-R: Zoe Jones, Ryan Shafer, Heather Paas, and Michael Paas.

The team opened up Saturday by swimming and skiing their way to a top 10 finish in the 'Rinse and Repeat' workout, which consisted of alternating a 50-yard swim with 8 calories on the ski-erg machine.

They followed that up with a third place finish in the 'Payload' Workout late Saturday to push their team up in the standings before Sunday's wrap up.

On Sunday, the 8th Day squad held their own through two final workouts to hold on for a top ten finish in the final overall standings.

The 8th Dayers finished 15th and 14th in their final two workouts to nail down their highest ever Games placing.

What Is CrossFit? And What Are The CrossFit Games?

CrossFit is a workout program designed around Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics and cardio workouts best summed by the famous six words, "Constantly varied functional movement at high intensity".

While the workouts were originally designed to challenge world class athletes, they are also designed to be scaled so almost anyone can perform them. From children to the elderly, there is a way for everyone to do a CrossFit workout.

Their goal as an organization is to show that everyone can seek and achieve a superior fitness level, no matter where they are in their fitness right now.

The CrossFit Games are held annually to test the best of the best with workouts that often include things outside of the realm of regular CrossFit training. It is grueling test of not only fitness, but mental will.

While the individual competitors are feted as the the "World's Fittest" man and woman, I find the Team category to be the most compelling, as the team members are asked to perform in sync with their teammates at times, and in the case of a running event this year, perform attached to their teammates with rope, providing for interesting viewing.
