The Illinois DNR made an announcement on Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022 that they had made a pick for renaming the Asian carp.
Asian carp is an invasive species that were originally imported to the United States in the 1970s as a way to control nuisance algal blooms in wastewater treatment plants and aquaculture ponds as well as for human food according to USGS
Illinois DNR Rename Asian Carp
Today the Illinois DNR held a special online event to share what they were renaming Asian carp. The live-streamed event was held at Chef and Chopped Champion Brian Jupiter's resturant Ina Mae Tavern.
Why Did They Rename Asian Carp
In a press release, the Illinois DNR said the name change was designed to address public misconceptions about this delicious top-feeding fish, which is overrunning Midwest waterways.
Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Colleen Callahan said:
“Copi is a great name: Short, crisp, and easy to say. What diner won’t be intrigued when they read Copi tacos or Copi burgers on a menu? It’s a tasty fish that’s easy to work with in the kitchen and it plates beautifully. Every time we’ve offered samples during the Illinois State Fair, people have walked away floored by how delicious it is"
John Goss, former White House invasive carp adviser had this to say about Copi:
“Enjoying Copi in a restaurant or at home is one of the easiest things people can do to help protect our waterways and Lake Michigan. As home to the largest continuous link between Lake Michigan and the Copi-filled Mississippi River system, Illinois has a unique responsibility in the battle to keep invasive carp."
