This video demonstrated a food hack that actually will work, but they forgot to take into account a critical element.

The TikTok Video Showed How To Keep Avocados Fresh

The video was posted to TikTok recently by the holistic mommy blogger ShamaMama. It showed that by stacking the oval green fruits in a water bottle covered with water, you can retain the freshness in avocados for weeks.

Just submerge them in water and store them in the fridge for up to a month.  She claims they'll be as good as new and the two-week-old avocado she cuts into does look pretty fresh.

The trick actually does work, EXCEPT for the fact that leaving the avocados in water for that long will also encourage the growth of bacteria some of which can be harmful.

Yup, we're talking some serious listeria and/or salmonella here, which if you've ever encountered either, you know it's NOT a fun experience, and having just survived a bout with the former, I can tell you that even a healthy person can get laid low by it.

Experts Say Bacteria Exists On Avocados Skin, And Will Grow In Water

The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning after seeing the video, saying, it's probably not a great idea.

"The FDA does not recommend this practice," a spokesperson told Newsweek. "The main concern is with the possibility that any residual human pathogens (i.e. Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, etc.) that may be residing on the avocado surface may potentially multiply during the storage when submerged in water.

"In addition, research performed by FDA scientists has shown that Listeria monocytogenes has the potential to infiltrate and internalize into the pulp of avocados when submerged in refrigerated dump tanks within 15 days during refrigerated storage, In this case, even surface disinfecting the avocado skin prior to slicing would not be able to remove the contamination."

And then there's this:

...further research by the FDA found that submerging avocados in refrigerated water allowed the Listeria monocytogenes to move from the outside of the fruit directly inside, making it all the easier to ingest.

So maybe we'll all be a little better off with brown looking avocado fruit after all.

Questionable Foods That Can Still Be Found in Stores

Here is a baker's dozen of foods Michiganders say they don't like, but for some reason, these items always mysteriously appear on the Michigan grocer shelves, week after week.
