Calvin Grad Allegedly Drugged & Raped During School Trip Abroad S

During a school trip to the Philippines, a former Calvin University student was allegedly drugged and raped by her host student.

When students go to other countries for study trips, they expect the school to know what kind of environment they send students to and make sure they are safe.

Western Michigan University is being sued by a former graduate who reported that her host student in the Philippines allegedly drugged and raped her after the student's end of the program celebration before returning to the states.

According to WOOD, in January 2020, students were sent on a study program during the winter break to Calvin's partner university, Silliman University in the Philippines. Silliman University selected student "buddies" to serve as hosts and translators for 22 Calvin Students.

The unnamed Calvin student ordered a beer, took a few drinks, and went to the restroom. When she returned to the bar, her host said he refilled her drink. Courts documents state her host laced drink with an incapacitating drug.

She had a few more sips of her drink then began to dance with her classmates and enjoy the celebration. She quickly became weak and disoriented and that is when her host offered to take her back to her hotel room.

The lawsuit states the host then allegedly took the young woman to a different hotel and raped her while she was coming in and out of consciousness. After the alleged rape, he took her to her actual hotel room and dropped her off.

WOOD reported, the next day the host sent her a text with a face emoji of an index finger over pursed lips, like he was telling her to be quiet. He messaged her that they could pretend nothing happened and that he would get into trouble if she said anything.

The lawsuit was filed Monday against Calvin University, Silliman University, and trip sponsor Dr. Dwight TenHuisen.
