First Covid 19 Vaccines Leave Grand Rapids Airport
The first supply of Covid 19 vaccines arrived in Grand Rapids via truck from The Pfizer plant in Kalamazoo on Sunday. They were then placed on planes at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport for domestic distribution. The shipment contains tens of thousands of vaccine doses for nationwide dissemination.
President and CEO of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority, Torrance Richardson, said in a press release,
"The Ford Airport is honored to play a key role in ensuring the vaccine gets into the hands of healthcare professionals around the country."
Ford Airport has a 10,000 foot runway, dedicated cargo facility and ground support needed to stage and deliver billions of doses of the vaccine. Four global carriers have expressed interest in helping to circulate the vaccine. The Gerald R. Ford International airport is the second busiest airport in Michigan and the closest to the Kalamazoo Pfizer plant with the appropriate infrastructure required.
Ford Airport launched a "Fly Safe. Fly Ford" campaign at the beginning of the pandemic. Torrance Richardson, CEO and President of the Airport Authority claims,
“Ford Airport is honored to be a key part of the distribution chain for Pfizer’s life-saving vaccine. We often say our Airport is the gateway to the world – this gives us the opportunity to underscore that in an exceptionally meaningful way.”
