Jay Z Supports Mayor Bill De Blasio’s Move to Close Rikers Island
Jay Z recently made a rare appearance on Twitter to show his support for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's plans to possibly shut down the infamous NYC corrections facility Rikers Island.
Last month, de Blasio laid out the possibility of closing the prison if crime in NYC continued its downward trajectory. In recent years, the prison has come under fire for neglect and abuse of prisoners.
Hov surely has a peaked interest in the situation after helping put together the The Kalief Browder Story documentary, which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
The six-part series chronicles Browder's tumultuous time at Rikers, which started with him being arrested for a crime he didn't commit. He ended up spending over 1,000 days in solitary confinement and committed suicide just two years after being released from prison.
Mr. Carter is all for the mayor's plans. "Kalief is a prophet," Jigga tweeted. "His story will save lives . You guys watching and your compassion made this happen. Thank you," he posted on Twitter, along with an article about de Blasio's decision.
“I look at Kalief Browder as a modern day prophet," Jay said last month about Browder's tragic story. "Our prophets come in many different shapes, forms, or mediums. This young man just by the fact that he brought all of us here today lets you know how powerful of a soul he was.”
In related news, the Brooklyn rap mogul will also produce a documentary film on Trayvon Martin.
