Visitors and staff have been evacuated from Grand Rapids John Ball Zoo following a gas leak, Fox 17 reports.

Around 1:30p.m. on Tuesday a construction crew working near the front of zoo hit a four-inch gas line.

The Zoo shared on Facebook that while staff, guests, and animals were not in immediate danger, they did decide to evacuate.

According to Fox 17,

Officials say that they are following protocols for the care of the animals at zoo. The birds are the most susceptible to the situation. Most of the animals are not affected by the gas in the same ways as humans."

John Ball Zoo is working with the Grand Rapids Fire Department and DTE to resolve the situation.

The Zoo remains closed until further notice.
