Mailbox Vs. Snowplow: How To Handle Winter Wipeouts In Michigan

What is Snowplow Mailbox Hockey Day?

Anyone who gets snow on January 23rd can participate in his cheeky unofficial holiday. It is when snowplow drivers intentionally try to knock over your mailbox.

It is reminiscent of Mario Kart vibes. Each mailbox is worth a point, and double mailboxes are worth three points. If it is a community mailbox, it is worth ten points.

Before you get mad at me, no one should knock over mailboxes. It is all simply a joke.

However, snowplows do tend to 'plow over' mailboxes.

In Grand Blanc, a Facebook user shared that a snowplow driver might have hit a new Guinness World Record after wiping out  12 mailboxes in a row!!

While many people may find that funny, this Grand Rapids Reddit user did not.

"A city snow plow just hit my parked car. The driver called the cops and I have since talked to them. My door handle for the drivers seat is completely broken and I can’t open my door and my driver side mirror is hanging on by a wire. What would be my next steps?"

What Should You Do If A Snowplow Accident Happens

If you live in Grand Rapids, there are a few things you should do if a snowplow causes any damage.

If you have sustained property damage or loss, or an injury due to City of Grand Rapids infrastructure or staff, you can file a claim for review and consideration.

The claim process can take anywhere between 30 to 60 days. If your claim is not resolved after 60 days, you should check in with the Risk Management office at 616-456-4670.

However, if your mailbox is the victim of a snowplow, you will usually be responsible for paying for the repairs or replacement. The property owner is responsible for repairing personal mailboxes, as the United States Postal Service (USPS) does not maintain them.
