As winter storms continue to sweep through Michigan, a common debate also continues: should you leave your windshield wipers up or keep them down when parking your car in the snow?

The Case For Leaving Wipers Up
As it was suggested to me, many Michigan drivers lift their windshield wipers before a snowstorm to prevent them from freezing to the windshield.
Those who are all for leaving the wipers up state that it is easier to clear off snow and ice in the morning without struggling to unstick their frozen blades.
The Case For Leaving Wipers Down
On the other hand, some experts urge caution against leaving your wipers up.
The strong winds or heavy, wet snow can put stress on the arms of the wiper, which potentially could bend or damage them.
AutoZone says that,
"It’s okay for a short time, like when you are changing the wiper blades, however, leaving them in the upward position for a long time can permanently stretch the springs over time."
Additionally, keeping wipers up reduces the risk of damaging the rubber blades when scraping ice off the windshield.
With both of the sides of the situation, what do you believe is best? If you are unsure, you can check your car's owner's manual. Many manufacturers recommend you keep the wipers down.
Either way, always clear your windshield and wipers off before you set off to make sure you and other drivers on the road are as safe as possible.
