What Should You Do If You Are Driving In Your Car During A Winter Storm?

First things first, SLOW DOWN!! If the roads look wet, you can assume that they are slick, as well.

Clear your car of any snow or ice before driving! Remember: it is illegal to drive that way and can become a hazard for other drivers.

Inform someone of where you are going and what routes and roads you will be taking, just in case something happens.

Do not leave the house without a proper emergency supplies kit. No worries, I have a full list of what should be in your kit.

What Should You Do If You Are Stuck In Your Car During A Winter Storm?

If you are stuck in your vehicle during a winter storm in Michigan, there are a few precautions that the National Weather Service recommends for you. First things first, stay in your vehicle! If you do leave your vehicle, the wind, snow and the cold could make you disoriented. In order to stay warm, run the engine for about 10 minutes per hour for the heat. While you are running the engine, you should also crack or open your window to let in fresh air to avoid monoxide poisoning.

If you are able to leave your vehicle, check and clear the snow from your exhaust people to avoid gas poisoning.

Since the whole idea is to get help, you must be visible to your rescuers despite the winter storm.

  • Make sure to turn your dome light on at night when running the engine.
  • Tie any bright colored scarf or cloth to your vehicle door to be spotted quickly
  • Raise the hood to indicate you need help once the snow stops
