Hug Your Way To Happiness—How Michigan Started A Global Celebration
Happy National Hugging Day!
With all of the negativity filling the news worldwide recently, this special day is needed.
Did you know that National Hugging Day was born right here in Michigan?
Hugging Day & Its Michigan Ties
In 1986, Reverend Kevin Zaborney, a Christian pastor and a University of Michigan psychology graduate, created this heartwarming holiday in Caro, Michigan.
Every year on January 21, people worldwide celebrate the importance of sharing their love and emotions in a safe, healthy physical way.
Reverend Zaborney came up with the idea to help encourage people to share hugs and foster connections. He recognized that many of us are hesitant to show our emotions consistently, especially during the post-holiday blues of January.
Hugging, as Reverend Zaborney pointed out, is a simple yet powerful way to lift spirits and improve emotional well-being. It can help with the winter blues.

The beauty of National Hugging Day lies in its simplicity. It reminds us to slow down, share kindness, and connect with those around us.
Hugs have been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and even boost your immune system. What better way to start the new year than with a little extra love?
So how can you celebrate today? Start with those closest to you—family, friends, or coworkers—and offer a heartfelt hug.
Remember to always ask for consent! You can also spread the love beyond your inner circle by volunteering or donating to organizations in West Michigan that support mental health and emotional wellness.
If you're not a hugger, don’t worry! Simply sharing a smile, a kind word, or a virtual hug over text or video call can still make someone’s day brighter.
Let’s honor Reverend Zaborney’s vision and make January 21 a day filled with connection, kindness, and warmth. Happy National Hugging Day!
