Dragon Trail in Newaygo County
If you are unfamiliar with the Dragon Trail, it's a bike and hiking trail that will eventually wrap all the way around the Hardy Pond in Newaygo County. The project began in 2019 and eventually will be a total of 47 miles when completed.
The public currently has access to 22 miles of trails. By the end of fall 2022, the public will have access to 32 miles of trails.
My son and I have personally been using one section of the Dragon Trail and it's absolutely beautiful for biking or hiking. Sometimes you pass by the Hardy Pond, other times you are heading down winding trails in the forest that surrounds the water.
What's Next for the Dragon Trail?
After three more bridges are completed for the next 10 miles of the Dragon Trail, the plan is to start the final two projects in 2023. One of the projects will be a section of the trail so those with disabilities have wheelchair access. There will be handicapped parking at the trailhead.
Final Funding For the Dragon Trail Approved
So far its been grants from the Department of Natural resources and donations that have been funding the Dragon Trail project. There have also been numerous volunteers who have helped with the trails which helped save money on the project.
According to WOOD, the American Rescue Plan Act has approved just over $1 million to cover the final cost of completing the remaining sections of the Dragon Trail.
My son and I plan to get the bikes out this weekend to complete another section of the trail. If you would like to take a ride or hike on the Dragon Trail and need more information, just click here.
