Pharrell, Mariah Carey and More Respond to Oprah’s Powerful Golden Globes Speech [WATCH]
Last night at the Golden Globes, while receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Oprah Winfrey gave a speech so powerful and poignant, she not only earned a standing ovation but prompted calls for her to run for president in 2020.
During her acceptance speech, she celebrated the #MeToo movement, and gave props to Recy Taylor who was abducted and raped by six white men on the way home from church in 1944. The men were never brought to justice and her case became an early catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement. Taylor passed away just a week ago, and Oprah urged everyone to remember her plight.
But aside from the story, it was Oprah's countenance and command of the room that had people hoping she'll make a presidential bid during the next election cycle. Immediately, she began trending with calls for her to make a run, a thought that has only been intensified in the hours since her speech, especially since CNN is now reporting that two of her close friends said that she's been seriously considering it.
"It's up to the people," Oprah's longtime partner, Stedman Graham told a Los Angeles Times reporter. "She would absolutely do it."
Meryl Streep is certainly on board with President Oprah.
The Washington Post quoted Streep saying that Winfrey "launched a rocket" with the speech.
"I want her to run for president," Streep told The Post. "I don't think she had any intention [of declaring]. But now she doesn't have a choice."
NBC even endorsed her in a since-deleted tweet that drew ire from the right and Donald Trump Jr.
At any rate, you an take a look at her speech above and check out responses from Pharrell, Ava DuVernay, Mariah Carey and more.
