It is a sad day for discount shoppers.
What Major Retailer Filed Bankruptcy?
The popular discount store, Big Lots, has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The Columbus, Ohio-based company announced that they have already begun to shut down 295 stores. Big Lots stated that they are "optimizing our store footprint."
In a press release, Big Lots President and CEO, Bruce Thorn, shared that,
"Though the majority of our store locations are profitable, we intend to move forward with a more focused footprint to ensure that we operate efficiently and are best positioned to serve our customers. To accomplish this, we intend to use the tools afforded by this process to continue optimizing our store fleet in an orderly manner."
Roughly 250 more locations will be completely shut down no later than January 15th, 2025.
What about people who have gift cards or store credit? No worries! The retailer will be honoring all gift cards and store credit cards.
