REPORT: The Big 10 Has Officially Postponed the Football Season
UPDATE: A previous version of this article stated that the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) would still be having fall sports in 2020. It was announced Wednesday, August 12, 2020 that GLIAC sports have been suspended until January 2021.
ORIGINAL STORY:
There will be no football for Big 10 teams this fall. ESPN is reporting that various sources within the conference have confirmed to them that the conference is postponing football season with hopes of being able to play the season out in the spring.
CBS Sports reports that the presidents of the universities within the Big 10 met Tuesday morning to officially decide the fate of the season.
Rumors about the cancellation or postponement of the season began Monday after it was reported that ten of the twelve presidents in the Big 10 had voted to not play football in the fall.
Several players and coaches from the conference took to social media Monday to express their wish to play this season using the hashtag #WeWantToPlay.
University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh released a statement Monday stating why he believed that the season should go on as planned. Michigan State University's newly appointed head coach, Mel Tucker, instead posted photos of players practicing while wearing masks.
In a statement, the Big 10 said that, "it became abundantly clear that there was too much uncertainty regarding potential medical risks to allow our student-athletes to compete this fall."
MSU head coach Mel Tucker released a statement following the announcement that said, in part:
While the conclusion to postpone the season is not easy for anyone, based on the medical recommendations, I respect the decision of the Big Ten Conference.
It's currently unclear what a spring season would look like for the B1G. You can read the full statement from the Big 10 here.
