Many television shows and movies are set or based on a Michigan city.

Unfortunately, one of the most iconic television series of all time, HBO's The Sopranos, has no Michigan ties that I am aware of.

But what if Tony Soprano and his crew weren't running the streets of North Jersey, but instead in Detroit?

For those who have not watched The Sopranos, the show is centering around "Tony Soprano, a New Jersey-based Italian-American mobster who struggles to balance his family life with his role as the leader of a criminal organization, which he reluctantly explores during therapy sessions with psychiatrist Jennifer Melfi. The series also features Tony's various family members, Mafia colleagues, and rivals in prominent roles—most notably his wife Carmela (Edie Falco) and his protégé and distant cousin Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli)," according to Wikipedia.

Luckily, we do not have to rack our brains too hard because the work has (in a way) done for us.

Back on March 21st, 2011, a video surfaced on YouTube paying homage to the show's famous opening credits - but with a Motor City twist.

In case you have not seen The Sopranos opening, here it is for you.

The homage video recreates The Sopranos intro with a drive through Detroit's streets, passing landmarks like the Ambassador Bridge, the Renaissance Center, and everything that defines the city.

After seeing this homage, an intriguing question: how would The Sopranos have played out if it had been set in Detroit?

Thinking of the auto industry, the Detroit version of the show might have leaned more gritter, blue-collar vibes.

While we'll never see a The Sopranos: Detroit spin-off, this fan-made video gives us a little glimpse of what could have been.

Would a Detroit-based Sopranos have worked?
