An Upper Peninsula resort and casino west of Escanaba has announced plans to open in phases starting May 6.

Wood TV 8 reports that Island Resort and Casino in Harris will be opening slot machines, select food service, select bars, bingo, and retail at 8a.m. Wednesday. The facility has been closed since March 21.

Golf courses will reopen May 8th and the hotel on May13th. Later phases will include opening table games and the spa, pool, and fitness center.

On Thursday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed executive order 2020-69 which extends her previous order that casinos, theaters, bars, and restaurant dining rooms remain closed through May 28th.

The Island Resort and Casino is not under state jurisdiction because it is owned by the Hannahville Indian Community.

Casino General Manager Tony Mancilla told Wood TV 8,

“As far as the governor’s order, those casinos are in the hot spot of Detroit. Those three casinos they have jurisdiction over are right in the middle of where all this is happening, and that makes sense. It doesn’t make sense for us here in the U.P. that was lightly hit."

The Island Resort and Casino said in a release that guests and staff who are not feeling well should stay home and follow the CDC's guidelines. They say they will be cleaning and sanitizing equipment and multi touch areas consistently. Guests and staff will have their temperature checked with an infared thermometer upon entering.

Masks will be available but not required.
