27,346 New Coronavirus Cases Since Monday Including Michigan’s Boat Guy
Many were predicting the holidays would increase the spread of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus and they were correct. In the first 48 hours of regular programming, Michigan reports 27,346 new cases of the coronavirus. This includes 277 new COVID related deaths.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports confirmed cases averaged 13,673 per day over the two-day period.
Governor Whitmer's 61 year-old husband is one of those infected. The Governor is isolating from her husband, Marc Mallory, in their Lansing home after he tested positive for COVID-19. Whitmer took a rapid test which gave a negative result. Both the governor and the first gentleman are fully vaccinated and have received a booster.
Michigan is still considered a COVID-19 hotspot after weeks of battling what doctors say is our fourth surge.
The State reported 22 new school-related COVID-19 outbreaks on Tuesday. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports more than 450 children under the age of 12 become infected with the virus each day.
This prompted Centers for Disease Control Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky to sign off on a recommendation for an emergency use authorization for Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for children 5 to 11 years old.
The Detroit Free Press says this is the highest daily COVID 19 case count since the pandemic began.
