The Grand River has over 50,000 storm drains that flow into our waterways.

Did you know that you could adopt one of those drains as your very own?

Why Adopt A Drain In Grand Rapids?

It seem like a unique thing to adopt (it is!), but it can also help so many community members across the Grand Rapids area.

Since the storm water runoff flows into the trains that take it to nearby rivers, streams, and lakes, the water is NOT treated before it reaches us and our waterways.

That is where you come in. If you adopt a drain, you can help to keep "storm drains clear of leaves, trash, and debris help avoid flooding, enables storm water to drain properly, and reduces water pollution."

Plus, you can name the storm drain anything you would like. As a Harry Potter fan, one of my favorites is "Drainco Malfoy," after the iconic villain turned loveable anti-hero, Draco Malfoy.

The City of Grand Rapids posted on Facebook a few of their favorite drain names, too.

How To Care For Adopted Drain

Similar to how parents take care of their children, you should also take care of your adopted drain.

LGrow offered a few tips to how you can take care of your adopted drain.

  • Check the weather weekly to stay up-to-date
  • Gather any tools you might need to clean the drain
  • Clear roughly 10 feet on both sides of your drain
  • When you collect the trash, you should separate trash from recyclables and more

I asked Canva's Magic Studio to help me out and show me what it thought a typical day in Grand RapidsMichigan looks like. It's... wild. And further shows that while AI can be useful, it's not as good as an actual, skilled human.
