Better Business Bureau Warns of Storm Clean-Up Scams in West Michigan [VIDEO]
After this week's storm, you may be facing roof problems, downed trees, and other damage to your yard and home.
The Better Business Bureau says residents should be on the look-out for scammers offering to help you with your clean-up.
According to WZZM-13, the BBB says those looking to scam you present themselves as contractors who can fix your problems.
They come into town after a storm, will promise to help you with your storm damage, then take off with your money without doing any work.
WZZM-13 shares these tips from BBB on hiring someone to help with storm damage:
- Get quotes from at least 3 different contractors.
- Ask for references along with proof of the contractor's licensing and insurance.
- Do not pay in advance. If you are asked for a down payment, it should be around one-third the total price. The rest should be paid when the works is done.
- Make sure you get a written contract that is clear on the price, the work to be done, and a time frame.
The BBB also says that contractor rates are highest right after the storm. If you can wait a few days before starting repairs, rates will likely drop.
