Why Is This The Deadliest Time Of The Year In Michigan?

Due to peak rutting (mating) season, November is the deadliest time of the year because of deer-vehicle collisions.

Michigan is one of the top states in the country for deer-vehicle crashes, with an average of 55,000 per year.

According to WZZM and the Insurance Alliance of Michigan, in 2022, 11 people died and 1,633 people were injured when involved in deer crashes.

Surprisingly, in 2022, Kent County is the Michigan county with the most car-deer crashes.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MODT) is working to identify wildlife crossings that pose a risk to Michigan drivers. Once they identify the crossings, MDOT will create plans to reduce the number of deer-vehicle collisions.

What Should You Do If You Hit A Deer?

Whether you are in a car, truck, or riding a motorcycle, these are the tips and actions that the State of Michigan recommends that you do if you hit a deer.

First, pull over and "turn your emergency flashers on, stay buckled up, and move your vehicle to the shoulder of the road if you can."

If you can't move your vehicle from traffic flow, leave your vehicle and stand on the side of the road.

After you are in a safe area, report the crash to the local authorities and your insurance company.

Make sure to document everything! You should take pictures of the vehicle's damage and all of the surroundings of the collision.

While you documenting, check your vehicle for damage. These damages could include leaking fluid, broken lights, etc.

Lastly, Michigan recommends you call for a tow for your vehicle, especially if your vehicle is unsafe.
