Thousands of people nationwide are injured for misuse of fireworks around the holidays.

The need for proper disposal of fireworks is for the safety of yourself, your family, and your community members.

If you want to prevent injuries for yourself and others, here are a few things to keep in mind while getting rid of your used and unused fireworks.

After you use fireworks, make sure to hose them down or put them in a bucket of water for at least 24 hours. This ensures that the explosives are completely un-ignited since fireworks can continue burning after the sparks have finished.

But, you must make sure that you are drowning it in water separately. Once that is down, you can put them in a trash bag to take out.

Even if you tried to ignite the fireworks and they did not go off, you have to do the same thing for safety precautions.

The Mid-Michigan Waste Authority also recommends the same situation for unused fireworks.

Once you have doused and soaked them in water, double wrap them in plastic wrap or two plastic bags so they do not dry out before throwing them away.

Remember that both, used and unused, fireworks cannot be recycled.

Make sure to dispose of your fireworks safely and properly!

Until next time, fireworks!
