Grand Rapids’ New Fire Station First In 37 Years Is Coming Soon
The Third Ward is getting a new addition to the area!
The city of Grand Rapids has been wanting to build a new fire station for years!
Now, it looks like it is finally coming to fruition.
Grand Rapids' First Fire Station In 37 Years
On Tuesday, September 17th, 2024, Grand Rapids city leaders came together for a groundbreaking ceremony for the newest fire station.
It is the first new fire station that will be built in the city of Grand Rapids in 37 years!
37 YEARS!!
The city leaders stated, during the event, that the Third Ward area of Grand Rapids was heavily underserved.
With this new fire station, the leaders are hoping it will improve response times for the surrounding neighborhoods for the next up to 100 years.
Grand Rapids Fire Department Chief, Brad Brown said,
"We had lagging response times down in the Third Ward. We had staffing troubles, we had budget woes, and we, frankly, didn't know how we were going to get there. And last year, we were granted a one-time special grant through the state of Michigan, and just really blessed to be able to put the plan into motion."
The new fire station, Station Number 12, will be located at the corner of Kalamazoo Avenue and Kendall Street.
Station Numer 12 will be a drive-through two-bay station with private living spaces, a modern kitchen, and a fitness area for the 12 assigned firefighters.
Since the groundbreaking ceremony has happened, the fire station construction is expected to be finished in the fall of 2025.
So, you do not have to wait much longer for this new fire station to be up and running.
