Why Is Chick-Fil-A Closed On Sunday?

Since the chicken fast food chain opened in 1946, all Chick-fil-A restaurants have been closed every single Sunday.

It has been a solidified rule that was created by the founder, S. Truett Cathy.

All Recipes shared the reasoning behind the restaurants being closed on Sundays.

"When Cathy opened his first Chick-fil-A restaurant in 1946, he decided the staff would only work six days a week. In those days, it was a pretty common practice to close businesses on Sundays, as Sunday is a day of worship in many religions. With businesses closed, people could attend their religious services without any conflicts."

On the Chick-fil-A website, the reason for the Sunday closure is also so employees can have one day set aside to rest, spend time with family, and worship "if they choose."

Why would they be changing their policy now?

Well, it is all because of a bill filed in New York.

Earlier in December, a bill was filed that specifically relates to restaurants at rest areas and transportation facilities.

The bill says that it wants all restaurants at the road stops to be required to be open all seven days of the week.

The bill reads,

"While there is nothing objectionable about a fast food restaurant closing on a particular day of the week, service areas dedicated to travelers is an inappropriate location for such a restaurant. Allowing for retail space to go unused one-seventh of the week or more is a disservice and unnecessary inconvenience to travelers who rely on these service areas."

If that bill passes into law, there may be a domino effect.

It could affect Chick-fil-A restaurants in airports, malls, and sporting venues around the country.
