Monday’s commute will different if you travel west along I-196 because MDOT is shutting down I-196 West at Ottawa Ave., starting 12:01 am Monday morning.

The project is going to rebuild and widen the bridge over the Grand River and making it easier to exit to 131.

It’s going to affect traffic in a few spots, so here’s what you need to know for detours:

96 Westbound, If you’re on before M-6, take M-6 to 131 North and then follow the detours to Leonard.  If you’re already past the M-6 exit, instead of getting off at I-196 West, you’re going to take I-96 to US 131 South and then you can get off on I-196 West.

If you’re heading north on 131 and you want to go west on I-196, you’re going to need to go up to Leonard St then get back on 131 South and take the I-196 West exit.

From downtown, you’ll take Monroe or Division to Leonard and then again, get on 131 South to the I-196 West exit.

The project is supposed to last until August 31st, according to MDOT
