Recalled Blanket Could Be Deadly For Michigan Kids

Target is recalling weighted children's blankets! Why?

Sadly, two young girls, aged 4 and 6, died from asphyxiation while they were playing with the weighted blanket at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina in April 2022.

The two girls were able to unzip the washable cover on the weighted blanket, crawled inside, and were trapped in the weighted blanket.

So, Target ordered this recall so that this tragedy does not happen to any other children or families.

What are the blankets in question?

The recalled weighted blankets are made by the company PillowFort, which were exclusively sold in Target stores in Michigan, nationwide, and online from December 2018 until September 2022.

In the press release, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that "the blankets weigh 6 pounds, measure 60 inches long and 40 inches wide, and have a removable, waterproof, washable cover."

The blankets come in 8 different prints and colors with the following affected by the recall:

  • 097-02-0140 (Unicorn - White),
  • 097-02-0148 (Space Navy),
  • 097-02-0361(Pink),
  • 097-02-0363 (Blue),
  • 097-02-0364 (Gray),
  • 097-02-1603 (Buffalo Plaid – Red),
  • 097-02-3904 (Blue Constellation) and
  • 097-02-3905 (Unicorn – Pink)

CPSC and Target are asking customers to stop using the recalled weighted blankets. You need to immediately contact Target for a full refund.

If you want to contact Target, you can call at 800-440-0680 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT daily to receive a prepaid return label to return the blankets by mail or return to any Target store.

You can also online and click on “Recall Information”, then on “Home Goods” for more information. Target is also contacting all known purchasers directly to arrange returns.
