Richard DeVos Dies at Age 92

Richard DeVos, the co-founder of Amway, and the man who helped make Grand Rapids the city that it is, has died at the age of 92.

DeVos leaves behind four children - Dick, Dan, Doug, and Cheri - and many grandchildren. His wife, Helen, died in October 2017.

DeVos and his lifelong business partner, Jay Van Andel, started Amway out of their basements back in 1959, and it eventually grew into a multi-billion dollar company.

In addition to providing much of the funding to build downtown Grand Rapids' DeVos place, WZZM-13 reports that DeVos was the person who championed the merger of Blodgett and Butterworth hospitals, and also made a sizable donation that led to the building of the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

DeVos' grandson, ArtPrize founder Rick DeVos, took to Twitter Thursday morning to eulogize his grandfather.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
